MEDICINEMA AT THE ROYAL HOSPITAL FOR SICK CHILDREN YORKHILL

The second MediCinema was opened at The Royal Hospital For Sick Children, Yorkhill, Glasgow in 2007.  Patients, including those in beds and wheelchairs, enjoy current  and well-loved children's classic releases twice a week, with their families, friends and carers, away from the reality of hospital life.

The all-encompassing environment includes surround sound, tiered seating, big screen and a 35mm projector operated by professional cinema projectionists.  Patients coming to a MediCinema screening have to be signed off to attend by the hospital staff and we have a professional cinema manager responsible for all health and safety issues and to publicise the screenings.

Trained volunteers bring the patients from the wards to the cinema and medical supervision is provided by two nurses on duty throughout each screening. Admission is free.

Cinema Manager: Sheila Hay Pacifico.

Message of support from Ewan McGregor:

"It's great that the young patients of Yorkhill Hospital have their very own MediCinema - it makes all the difference - giving them something to look forward to.  It's no fun being a child in hospital and having a trip to the movies with mum and dad they can pretend they're not in hospital.  Watching a film takes their mind off their pain and makes them feel better."

Message of support from Robbie Coltrane:

"Great news about MediCinema at Yorkhill Children's Hospital - if the kids can't get to the cinema then the cinema has to come to them!"

MediCinema Yorkhill was a Finalist in the Building Better Healthcare Awards 2007.
