MEDICINEMA AT THE ROYAL VICTORIA INFIRMARY NEWCASTLE

MediCinema at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary officially opened on December 14th 2009.

The all-encompassing environment includes surround sound, tiered seating, big screen and it's the first MediCinema to go digital (we plan for all our future cinemas to be digital).  Patients coming to a MediCinema screening have to be signed off to attend by the hospital staff and we have a professional cinema manager responsible for all health and safety issues and to publicise the screenings.

Trained volunteers bring the patients from the wards to the cinema and medical supervision is provided by two nurses on duty throughout each screening. Admission is free.

Cinema Manager: Joss Spires

Message of support from Helen Lamont, Assistant Director of Nursing and Patient Services at the Trust:

“This is a particularly innovative idea which will significantly enhance a patient’s stay in hospital. For long stay patients there is rarely the opportunity to leave the ward and this presents a perfect diversion from the stresses of a time in hospital. Having seen the cinema at St Thomas’ in action I am sure this will provide a significant benefit to a large number of patients”.
