Neurodiversity Celebration Week: The Importance of Inclusive Cinema Experiences
Neurodiversity Celebration Week is a powerful reminder of the importance of safe, inclusive environments where neurodiverse children and young people feel understood and are catered for.
One shining example of such a place is the Serennu Children’s Centre in Newport, a purpose built, family centred facility dedicated to supporting children with disabilities and developmental differences. The centre brings together health services, social services, therapy spaces, leisure activities, and family support under one roof, offering coordinated and truly holistic care for children and young people in their community.
MediCinema at Serennu
At the heart of the Serennu Children’s Centre is our 51 seat, fully accessible, MediCinema. With free screenings of the latest releases several times a week, the MediCinema gives Serennu’s families the chance to enjoy the magic of film together in a space tailored to their needs – whether that involves wheelchair access, space for medical equipment such as hoists, sensory toys and equipment, or simply the freedom for children to express themselves without fear of being misunderstood.
For many neurodiverse children, mainstream cinemas can be overwhelming or inaccessible. MediCinema removes those barriers. As one parent beautifully said:
I’ve never felt more relaxed with my son in an environment like this before. It didn’t matter how he acted, and I wasn’t worried about how people would perceive him. I’m so grateful that we had the opportunity to go and can’t wait for our next visit.
Charlotte & Finley’s Story
For many of our visitors, MediCinema gives them the opportunity to experience the cinema as a family for the first time. Finley has autism which for him means he can often feel overwhelmed by loud noises and new environments. Finley’s sister, Charlotte, has a rare and complex medical condition which means visiting public spaces, such as high street cinemas, can be very difficult. When their family were invited to the MediCinema at the Serennu Children’s Centre, it offered them an experience that they had never been able to access before.
MediCinema has been a game-changer for our family. It’s given us a wonderful opportunity that we wouldn’t normally be able to access – and it allows both of our children to be themselves.
