Pearl & Dean’s Gavin Worrell And Royal Victoria Infirmary’s Helga Charters To Join The MediCinema Board

06th Oct 2022

Gavin Worrell, Group Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer at Pearl & Dean, and Helga Charters, Associate Director Nursing for Children and Young People at The Great North Children’s Hospital, Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary are joining the MediCinema Board of Trustees.

They will both join in October and as MediCinema plans its longer-term strategic objectives which aims to reach more beneficiaries with wider impact through its hospital cinemas and bedside services.

Gavin has more than 25 years of corporate, management and entrepreneurial experience in the media industry and is Group CFO and COO of the Pearl & Dean Media Group. Gavin has previously been a Trustee, Director, and interim Chair of an international deaf children’s charity.   He holds several directorships and was awarded Fellowship Status at the Chartered Institute over a decade ago.   He has a career background in both Shepperton and Pinewood Film Studios, working further in the production and broadcast industry.

Helga was a Matron in Children’s Services for 17 years before becoming the Associate Director of Nursing (CYP) covering children’s services at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary’s Great North Children’s Hospital and the children’s heart unit at the Freeman Hospital.  She also leads the Safeguarding and Learning Disability Team for children and adults. She currently has a two day a week secondment with NHS England / Improvement’s Children’s Transformation Team as Clinical Programme Lead for Health Inequalities for CYP across the North East and Yorkshire Region.

I am absolutely delighted that both Gavin and Helga have joined our Board of Trustees at this important time. Gavin brings a hugely valuable entrepreneurial approach coupled with an in-depth knowledge of the media industry whilst Helga has a wonderfully deep knowledge and experience of the NHS sector and has witnessed many times what a visit to a MediCinema means to patients and their families. I’m excited for the charity to benefit from the expertise and passion that both Gavin and Helga will bring to the team.

Kezia Williams, Chair of the MediCinema Board

I have long been an admirer of the work that MediCinema does and am really pleased to be joining at a time when the charity is planning its strategic objectives for the next few years. The services and impact that MediCinema was able to deliver in hospitals during COVID and coming out of the worst of the pandemic was incredibly impressive and I’m looking forward to being able to bring my experience to the table at this time.

Gavin Worrell

I have seen at first hand for some years the positive impact that visiting a MediCinema has on the well-being of both patients and their families whilst they are undergoing treatment in our hospital. I am fortunate to have worked closely with the MediCinema team and proud of our relationship both personally and as an organisation. The patients and their families are cared for so very well collectively and individually and the team are always willing to support any initiatives within the hospital if they can. I am extremely happy to join the Board and am very much looking forward to working closely with them.
