What We Do

We build, install and run state-of-the-art cinemas in hospitals.

MediCinema improves the wellbeing and quality of life of NHS patients and their families through the power of the shared cinema experience and the magic of film. We create and operate cinemas inside hospitals, specially designed to accommodate beds, wheelchairs and medical equipment and we screen the latest films completely free of charge. Using this unique approach our cinema-based programmes boost patient resilience, improving the emotional and physical impact of being in hospital.

At no cost to the NHS, since our inaugural MediCinema opened in 1999 at St Thomas' Hospital in London, we've provided hundreds of thousands of unforgettable cinematic experiences to patients, their families, and those closest to them, completely free of charge.

Clinical View

I see just how damaging loneliness can be. But for those in hospital feeling low, frail, and recovering from illness, a sense of connection to the world might feel out of reach. It’s so valuable for us as medical professionals to be able to offer patients a service like MediCinema because it promotes social inclusion and empowerment.

Look, here’s a hand-reaching out – here are people who want to help in way that acts as an extension of our care. People forget just how much value there is in belonging and engaging with others on a human level, how it improves patient wellbeing.

Our Patients

Even though Rhys was going to need to walk again, the MediCinema gave him somewhere to walk to. It gave him the motivation to take that first step. In the past when Rhys has been in hospital he’s gone in on himself. But after that screening he was buzzing. It was like he got a new lease of life.

Rhys’s Dad

On the ward I felt so tired and in pain but in the MediCinema I felt different. I think it was a combination of the excitement, doing something I love, and the boost of energy the experience gave me – it took my mind off the pain. On the way back from the screening my husband said that he felt he had the old Nadine back, that I was back to my old self, before the surgery.

Patient

MediCinema has the power to take children away from the scary injections, the lack of sleep, unsettling atmosphere, everything – until they leave hospital only remembering the good parts.

After my kidney transplant I spent the next few days recovering on the ward. I really appreciated the opportunity to have the time away from the ward at the MediCinema, a bit of time to myself when I wasn’t being poked or prodded. But more than that it gave me a boost to know that I was well enough to go, that I must be recovering. For a while you’re not ill, you’re not a patient, you’re just a person enjoying a film with others.
